UCLA SIMULATION CENTER PUTS HSA STUDENTS TO THE TEST
Students learned about medical procedures on the same equipment used to train medical students and provide continuing education to physicians.
Shortness of breath, a heart ultrasound, gall bladder surgery, labor and cardiac arrest were just a few of the medical procedures/emergencies that HSA students had an opportunity to assist with during their tour of the state-of-the-art simulation center at UCLA.
Center instructors allowed students hands-on access to equipment that creates a virtual training ground for laparoscopic surgery and transoesophageal echocardiograms. Students were then introduced to a family of high fidelity full-body computer-controlled mannequins that have realistic systems and responses. This offered them a chance test vital signs, deliver a newborn, and even administer electric shock treatment!
Students and staff alike were inspired by the visit. Said one HSA freshman of the experience, "I seriously know what I want to do with my life now that I've had that special opportunity to experience first hand what doctors do. That totally set off a lightbulb in my head."
A very special thank you to Yue Ming Huang, Ed.D., M.H.S., Jamie Stiner, Roxy Khan and everyone at the Simulation Center for providing our students with this incredible and inspiring experience. We are also grateful to Target for generously providing transportation costs for the trip through a 2010 Target Field Trip Grant.
