Alliance Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Health Services Academy (PBS HSA) High School is a free public charter school designed to equip students in South Los Angeles with the tools necessary to excel in high school curriculum, to prepare them to enter and succeed in college, and to motivate them to select health care related majors and careers – areas in which minority students like those in our school community are grossly underrepresented. 

 

A key component of the PBS HSA model is providing students with access to medical and allied health professions and professionals.  To that end, PBS HSA hold a monthly Health Careers Speaker Series featuring panels of health service professionals.  Participants are asked to share information about their educational path, career, challenges in their field and in the health care community, and other aspects of health services with our students.  By sharing the experiences they have gained, our speakers help to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and give HSA students the opportunity to build vital connections between their academic classes and real world occupations.

 

Speakers are recruited from a diverse range of medical and allied health professions so as to give students a comprehensive view of the varied fields of study and practice.  To date, the series has featured speakers from a variety of fields including:

 

 

In addition to continuing to highlight these fields, we are eager to add more diverse health careers to this program. We know that there are plenty of careers to expose our students to and we believe you may be the key to making that happen!
